Local Environmental Conditions
Woodland and built-up land share the area around the center of Watson, plus a good deal of open grassland. Along a stream or river nearby, trees such as poplar, alder and plane tree grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. Common allergenic trees nearby include olive, ash and oak. Grasses are a major source, with plantain and pigweed adding to the weed pollen load.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and olive, ash and oak are in full flower. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by early fall. Later, plantain and pigweed keep weed pollen in the air from mid-spring into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Watson come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Watson based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Watson, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
