Straddling the NSW-Queensland border at the coast, Tweed Heads carries typical northern-rivers coastal vegetation: pandanus and casuarina along the foreshore, banksia scrub on sandy headlands, and canal-estate gardens planted with tropical and subtropical ornamentals. Paperbark wetlands sit behind the dunes, and remnant coastal rainforest patches occur on higher ground. Mangroves line the Tweed River estuary. The combination of salt-tolerant coastal natives and lush garden plantings produces a long, mild flowering season.

When is pollen season in Tweed Heads?
Straddling the NSW-Queensland border at the coast, Tweed Heads shares the near-year-round subtropical pollen pattern of the Gold Coast just to its north. Tree pollen from paperbark and eucalypt peaks August-October, and grass pollen across parks and canal-estate lawns runs September to December. Onshore breezes off the river mouth and ocean generally keep counts milder here than a few kilometres inland, though the town's canal and waterway system means plenty of grassed foreshore to keep local grass pollen ticking over.

Does pollen in Tweed Heads come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Tweed Heads based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Tweed Heads, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
