Tumut is a Snowy Mountains foothill timber town, and softwood pine plantations (radiata pine) dominate the surrounding hills alongside native eucalypt forest. Willows line the Tumut River through town, and poplar avenues were planted as windbreaks on the river flats. Pasture grasses cover cleared valley floor paddocks used for grazing. Wattle flowers in late winter on forest margins. Pine pollen from the plantation estate is a distinctive seasonal contributor not found in most NSW towns.

When is pollen season in Tumut?
Tumut's pollen calendar carries an unusual extra driver alongside the standard temperate pattern: the vast softwood pine plantations ringing the town. Wattle and eucalypt open the season from August, grass pollen from the river flats and grazing country peaks October to December as usual, but pine pollen can add a further, highly visible dusting each spring. The valley setting and cooler mountain air can trap pollen on still mornings before afternoon winds disperse it.
How often is the Tumut pollen forecast updated?

The Tumut pollen forecast is updated four times daily. See the timestamp below for the most recent update.

Does pollen in Tumut come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Tumut based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Tumut, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
