Local Environmental Conditions
Around 100% of the area near the heart of Shire of East Gippsland is woodland. The surrounding woodland makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses add a sizeable share of the local pollen. Gaps in the canopy, trails and forest edges give grasses and herbs room to grow. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Woodland and street trees lead off, with tree pollen peaking around early spring. Grass pollen builds from mid-spring, peaks around late spring and stays noticeable until midsummer. The season closes with a lower weed peak from early summer into early fall, mostly from roadside and field-edge plants. Dry, sunny and breezy weather raises levels within each period, and steady rain brings them down.
