Local Environmental Conditions
Phillip Island's exposed coastal setting favours hardy, salt-tolerant vegetation: moonah woodland and coastal tea-tree scrub cover the dunes and headlands, with tussock grassland on the open, wind-scoured plains. Dairy and beef grazing pasture occupies the cleared farmland inland from the coast. Coastal banksia occurs in sheltered pockets. The island's low, wind-pruned vegetation produces a milder pollen profile overall than sheltered mainland valleys, dominated by coastal scrub and pasture grass rather than tall trees.
Phillip Island's exposed Bass Strait coastal position keeps pollen counts generally milder than inland Victoria, with onshore winds diluting both tree and grass pollen through the temperate spring season. Eucalypt and coastal tea-tree flower from late August, and grass pollen from the island's dairy and grazing paddocks peaks in November. Being surrounded by sea on most sides, the island rarely sees the sharp inland pollen spikes typical of Victoria's drier plains.
