Parkes sits amid Central West NSW's box-ironbark woodland and grazing country, with scattered eucalypts, wattle and native cypress pine surviving among extensive wheat, canola and sheep-grazing paddocks. Best known internationally for the Parkes Observatory ('The Dish') standing amid open cropping plains, remnant woodland here is mostly confined to travelling stock reserves and roadside corridors between cultivated fields.
