Local Environmental Conditions
Northam anchors WA's wheatbelt on the Avon River, a landscape almost entirely cleared for wheat and canola cropping and sheep grazing; remnant salmon gum and York gum woodland survives in scattered reserves, with wattle prominent each spring along uncleared roadsides. The area's Mediterranean-type climate produces a winter wattle season followed by a spring grass pollen peak, both easing markedly once the characteristically dry, warm summer arrives.
