Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of North Hills is mostly open grassland, with a good deal of scrubland and some woodland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Trees are an important local pollen source, given how much woodland surrounds the area. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and pigweed is the main weed source.
Across the year, trees are the first to release pollen, with a peak around early spring. Grass pollen builds from early spring, peaks around late spring and stays noticeable until midsummer. Pigweed brings a later peak from early summer into early fall. Dry, sunny and breezy weather raises levels within each period, and steady rain brings them down.

Does pollen in North Hills come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in North Hills based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in North Hills, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 pollen scores represent risk levels, not direct pollen measurements. Higher scores indicate higher risk.
