Local Environmental Conditions
The heart of Mount Murray is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. There is plenty of grass pollen here too. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds. Clearings, tracks and woodland edges let grasses and other flowering plants grow among the trees.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in late winter. Grasses take over in late spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. Weeds on open ground add a smaller late peak from early summer into early fall. Fall is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Mount Murray come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mount Murray based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mount Murray, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
