Maldon, a well-preserved goldfields town, sits within box-ironbark woodland on the dry granite country of central Victoria. Cypress and remnant ironbark and grey box cover the surrounding hills, while the historic streetscape carries mature exotic plantings, elm and plane, among its heritage buildings. Grazing pasture fills cleared paddocks beyond the town. Wattle is prolific on woodland margins in late winter. Box-ironbark flowering is the area's most distinctive native tree pollen event.
