Local Environmental Conditions
Malanda sits on the Atherton Tablelands, a volcanic plateau where rich red soils have been cleared for dairy pasture, leaving remnant tropical rainforest, including strangler figs, in scattered patches and along protected gullies. The elevated, cooler tableland climate moderates the tropical extremes of the coast below. Camphor laurel occurs as a naturalised weed on disturbed ground. Dairy pasture grasses dominate the open pollen calendar, contrasting with the dense rainforest remnants nearby.
Malanda's elevated Atherton Tablelands setting gives it a cooler, milder version of the tropical pattern than the coastal cane towns below. Grass pollen from the tablelands' dairy pasture builds through the dry season from May to October, and tree pollen from eucalypt and rainforest-fringe species opens later in the dry, around August-October. The tablelands' altitude brings cooler nights and more frequent mist, which can keep pollen counts a touch lower than at sea level.
