Local Environmental Conditions
Around 80% of the area near the center of Londonderry is scrubland, with some woodland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Locally, scrubland contributes pollen from shrubs, grasses and herbs. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
Woodland and street trees lead off, with tree pollen peaking around early spring. From early spring, grass pollen rises to a peak around mid-spring before easing off by late summer. Weeds on open ground add a smaller late peak from early summer into early fall. Dry, sunny and breezy weather raises levels within each period, and steady rain brings them down.

Does pollen in Londonderry come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Londonderry based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Londonderry, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
