Local Environmental Conditions
Kununurra was built around the Ord River irrigation scheme, so irrigated crops — mangoes, sandalwood, sorghum — surround a town otherwise set in eucalypt savanna woodland; boab trees are a signature local feature, with paperbark wetlands and pandanus lining the river and lake margins. Like much of the monsoonal north, this area sees the bulk of its plant growth and flowering during the wet season, with a distinctly quieter dry season the rest of the year.
Kununurra, in WA's East Kimberley irrigation district, follows the Top End's monsoonal wet-dry pollen pattern rather than the state's Mediterranean southwest calendar. Grass pollen from irrigated farmland and surrounding savanna builds through the dry season from May, peaking later in the dry, while tree pollen from eucalypt, acacia and paperbark species typically opens around August to October. The wet season from November to April brings heavy monsoon rain that suppresses pollen until the following dry season resumes, with irrigation sustaining some grass growth even through drier months.
