Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around the center of Kingscote is open grassland, with a good deal of farmland and some woodland. The damp ground beside a stream or river nearby supports trees, shrubs and reeds, adding to local pollen. Grasses matter a great deal here, and pigweed is the main weed source.
Trees are the first to release pollen, with a peak around early spring. Grass flowering starts in early spring, is strongest around late spring and winds down by midsummer. Later in the year, pigweed adds weed pollen from early summer into early fall. Within each of these periods, warm, dry and windy days push levels higher, while rain clears the air.

Does pollen in Kingscote come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kingscote based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kingscote, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 pollen scores represent risk levels, not direct pollen measurements. Higher scores indicate higher risk.
Pollen
