Local Environmental Conditions
Kiama's volcanic headlands and dairy hinterland give it a mixed vegetation profile. Cabbage tree palms and casuarina cluster along the rocky foreshore, while remnant rainforest gullies cling to the Illawarra escarpment behind town. Dairy pasture grasses dominate the cleared farmland, and English-heritage street plantings, plane and elm, line the older parts of town. Eucalypt forest patches persist on steeper slopes. The mix of salt-tolerant coastal natives and introduced pasture grasses shapes the local pollen calendar.
