Local Environmental Conditions
Kerang lies amid the Murray-Riverina wetlands, where river red gum forest and box woodland fringe an extensive network of lakes and irrigation channels. Irrigated dairy pasture covers much of the cleared land, while saltbush and other chenopod shrubs appear on drier, salt-affected margins away from the water. Wattle flowers on woodland edges in late winter. The wetland-fringed red gum forest is unusually extensive for the region, making it the area's leading tree pollen contributor.
Kerang sits amid the Murray plains' wetlands and cropping country, giving it a grass-dominated season that builds from September and peaks in October-November as surrounding cereal and pasture paddocks head into seed. Wattle flowers earlier from August. The flat, open plains around the town mean little to block wind-blown pollen, and dry northerly winds off the plains can push counts higher on warm spring days.
