Dubbo's inland location on the Macquarie River gives it a slightly more compressed pollen season than the coast. Eucalypt and wattle trees release pollen from August, with river red gums along the Macquarie adding to the tree count. Grasses across the surrounding cropping and grazing plains peak from October through December, often intensified by warm, dry inland conditions that carry pollen further on the wind. Thunderstorms crossing the plains in spring can trigger rapid asthma flare-ups, a known risk across inland NSW during peak grass season.

A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation.
