Cootamundra gives its name to the golden-flowered Cootamundra wattle, a striking presence in and around town each late winter; the surrounding Riverina landscape is otherwise cropping and grazing country, with box-gum woodland remnants and cypress pine along its drier ridges. Pollen loads here tend to climb through spring as introduced pasture grasses set seed alongside flowering eucalypts and wattle, before dropping away once the drier heat of summer takes hold.

When is pollen season in Cootamundra?
In the wheat and grazing country of the South West Slopes, Cootamundra's pollen season is dominated by grasses tied to the surrounding cropping land. Grass pollen, especially from ryegrass and wild oats along roadsides and paddocks, builds from September and peaks in October and November. Tree pollen, including from the town's namesake wattle, appears earlier in winter and early spring. Being well inland, Cootamundra experiences hot, dry summers that cut the season short compared with coastal NSW, usually easing by December.

Does pollen in Cootamundra come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Cootamundra based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Cootamundra, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
