Coonabarabran sits beneath the Warrumbungle Range, where ironbark and cypress pine woodland cover the rocky ranges and grazing pasture fills the cleared valleys. Remnant stands of white box and grey box occur on travelling stock routes, and river red gum follows local creek lines. Wattle is abundant on woodland edges in late winter. The mix of rugged native woodland and open grazing country gives a fairly typical central-west NSW pollen profile, tree-dominated in the ranges.
