Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of Coolalinga is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. A watercourse nearby means riverside vegetation is part of the local pollen picture. The surrounding woodland makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed among the weeds. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
Temperatures stay between about 25°C and 30°C through the year, so plants release pollen in most months. The drier stretch around June to August usually brings the most pollen. During the rainy season, frequent heavy downpours wash much of the pollen out of the air. Mold spores join in from early summer into mid-fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive.

Does pollen in Coolalinga come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Coolalinga based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Coolalinga, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
