Local Environmental Conditions
Around 58% of the area near Castle Cove is woodland, with a good deal of built-up land and some open water. Among allergenic trees nearby, olive is the main source. Grasses are a major source, with plantain and pellitory adding to the weed pollen load. Street trees, private gardens and mown lawns add to local pollen in the more built-up surroundings.
Olive leads the season in early spring, as temperatures climb to around 15°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Grasses take over in mid-spring and keep pollen in the air into mid-fall. Plantain and pellitory flower through much of the warmer half of the year. In warm, humid weather from midsummer into early fall, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in Castle Cove come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Castle Cove based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Castle Cove, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
