Local Environmental Conditions
The center of Buninyong is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of open grassland. The damp ground beside a watercourse nearby supports trees such as willow, adding to local pollen. Allergenic trees nearby include oak, cypress and willow. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside plantain among the weeds. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
Cypress opens the pollen season in late winter. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak and willow are in full flower. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by late summer. The season closes with plantain from late spring into early fall. Rain is heaviest in spring, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels.

Does pollen in Buninyong come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Buninyong based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Buninyong, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
