Braidwood is a historic tableland town where heritage plantings of elm and oak line the wide streets, a legacy of its 19th-century settlement. Surrounding country is open eucalypt woodland, mostly peppermint and stringybark, interspersed with grazing pasture for sheep and cattle. Wattle flowers heavily on woodland margins in late winter. The cool, elevated tablelands climate delays exotic tree flowering into spring, giving Braidwood a later, more compressed pollen season than nearby coastal towns.

When is pollen season in Braidwood?
Braidwood's high, cold Southern Tablelands setting gives it one of the more compressed and later-starting pollen seasons in NSW. Frosts linger into early spring, holding back wattle and eucalypt flowering until late August or September, with grass pollen across the surrounding grazing country then peaking in November. The cooler climate here means the season is shorter and often milder in overall intensity than in the warmer valleys and coastal towns to its east.
How often is the Braidwood pollen forecast updated?

The Braidwood pollen forecast is updated four times daily. See the timestamp below for the most recent update.

Does pollen in Braidwood come from nearby or far away?

Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.

Are pollen levels in Braidwood based on measurements or forecasts?

Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Braidwood, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
