Local Environmental Conditions
Bega anchors a dairying valley on the NSW far south coast, its river flats given over to improved pasture grass; surrounding hills carry spotted gum and stringybark forest, with wattle a conspicuous late-winter bloomer along roadsides and paddock margins. Like much of the surrounding region, this area sees an early wattle and eucalypt flowering season give way to a longer grass pollen period running from spring into early summer.
Bega, set in a dairy valley just inland from the South Coast, has a pollen season shaped heavily by its surrounding pasture. Grass pollen from ryegrass and clover-rich paddocks builds from September and typically peaks across October and November, feeding off the valley's reliable rainfall and rich soils. Tree pollen from casuarina and eucalyptus appears earlier, from August, but is generally overshadowed by the grass load. Being inland of the coastal escarpment, Bega often records warmer days and higher pollen counts than the coast itself.
