In Playa del Inglés, Saharan dust intrusions and local traffic are the main local influences on air quality. Levels vary more with Saharan dust events than with local traffic. Air quality can shift dramatically within a single day when a calima arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Playa del Inglés right now?

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Playa del Inglés?
On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Playa del Inglés will be similar to today, with O3 forecast at fair at 31.2/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 AM (PM10: 50.3/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Playa del Inglés?
Does air quality in Playa del Inglés vary by season? January is frequently the most difficult month, with cold stagnant air allowing wood-smoke and exhaust to build up instead of clearing. Spring usually brings an improvement as more frequent rain and stronger winds help clear the air and wash out pollutants that built up over winter. Summer can bring periodic wildfire smoke on top of the usual ozone build-up from intense heat and sunshine. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. The Canaries' subtropical position moderates the usual seasonal pattern, but dust blown in from the nearby Sahara can cause sudden spikes at any time of year.
Are air quality levels in Playa del Inglés based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
