In Dunas de Maspalomas, dust from arid surrounding land and local traffic are the main local influences on air quality. Levels vary more with Saharan dust events than with local traffic. Calima events, when Saharan dust sweeps in, are by far the biggest local air-quality concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Dunas de Maspalomas right now?

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Dunas de Maspalomas?
On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Dunas de Maspalomas will be similar to today, with O3 forecast at fair at 31.2/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 AM (PM10: 48.9/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Dunas de Maspalomas?
What is the yearly air quality pattern like in Dunas de Maspalomas? The coldest months usually see the year's poorest conditions, since calm anticyclonic weather holds local traffic and wood-burning pollution near street level. Spring usually brings an improvement as more frequent rain and stronger winds help clear the air and wash out pollutants that built up over winter. The long, hot days of summer favour ozone build-up, which can spike on the stillest, sunniest afternoons. Autumn usually sees a steady return to cleaner conditions as the ozone-favouring heat of summer fades and rainfall picks up. Being closest to the Sahara, these islands see calima dust events more often than any other part of Spain, on top of an otherwise mild, trade-wind climate.
Are air quality levels in Dunas de Maspalomas based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
