In Vila Olímpica, road traffic and port and shipping emissions have the largest effect on air quality. Air quality is generally worse near the port and main traffic corridors. The surrounding hills can trap pollution against the city on still, windless days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Vila Olímpica right now?

On 19 July 2026, overall air quality in Vila Olímpica is fair. PM2.5 is the main pollutant at 20.6/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 PM (O3: 54.5/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Vila Olímpica?

On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Vila Olímpica will be better than today, with AQI forecast at medium at 58.6/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 PM (O3: 58.6/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Vila Olímpica?

How does air quality change throughout the year in Vila Olímpica? Air quality is typically at its weakest in December and January, when cold, calm high-pressure spells trap traffic exhaust and wood-smoke close to the ground instead of letting it disperse. As spring progresses, wetter and windier conditions generally help flush out the traffic and heating pollution that built up over winter. Summer's combination of intense sun and high temperatures makes ozone the main concern, occasionally compounded by wildfire smoke during dry, windy spells. Autumn generally marks the shift back toward calmer, cleaner conditions as temperatures drop and rainfall becomes more regular. This Mediterranean location benefits from regular sea breezes, though summer's higher traffic volumes and occasional Saharan dust events can offset that.

Are air quality levels in Vila Olímpica based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
