Roodepoort's air quality reflects its position in the western Johannesburg metropolitan corridor, with vehicle traffic on the N14 and the surrounding mixed residential and industrial character generating elevated PM2.5 alongside the Highveld's winter inversion problem. Gold mining legacy dust from the surrounding West Rand mine dumps contributes elevated heavy metal particulates under strong westerly winds, while the elevated 1,700-metre plateau position aids background dispersal on windy days.
