Kwamhlanga's air quality reflects the Mpumalanga Highveld position near the coal mining corridor, with vehicle dust from roads and surrounding informal settlement biomass burning and the regional coal-fired power station SO₂ background contributing the primary local sources. Winter Highveld temperature inversions concentrate power station plumes and residential burning across the plateau, while the elevated 1,400-metre position aids background dispersal on windy summer days.
