Kroonstad's air quality reflects its position on the Vaal River in the Free State province, with vehicle traffic on the N1 national road and the surrounding grain farming, coal transport corridor, and light industry contributing local sources. The flat Free State Highveld generally allows reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while winter Highveld temperature inversions concentrate vehicle and coal-related emissions across the low-lying Vaal floodplain, and the regional coal transport from the Highveld coalfields adds background PM2.5 throughout the year.

Are air quality levels in Kroonstad based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns.
