The Tagus river provides Atlantic ventilation from the south, while the surrounding Ribatejo agricultural plain and the estuary's open geometry generally maintain moderate conditions, and the industrial character of the Vila Franca de Xira corridor makes it one of the more emissions-intensive municipalities in the greater Lisbon metropolitan area.
