Zabrze's air quality faces serious challenges as part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the legacy of the Makoszowy coal mine and the surrounding coking and steel industry combined with vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway generating elevated PM2.5, SO₂, and benzo[a]pyrene concentrations. The flat Silesian basin provides some wind dispersal, but the industrial density of the surrounding Katowice-Gliwice-Zabrze conurbation maintains persistently elevated background pollution.
