Wałbrzych's air quality faces significant challenges from the Lower Silesian coalfield legacy, with the surrounding Wałbrzych-Nowa Ruda hard coal mining history and residential coal heating generating elevated PM2.5 and benzo[a]pyrene alongside vehicle traffic on the surrounding expressway network. The Sudeten Mountains' enclosed Wałbrzych Basin creates topographic concentration under frequent winter inversions, making this one of Poland's more persistently challenging air quality environments.
