Suwałki's air quality reflects the flat Suwałki Highland lake district in northeastern Poland near the Lithuania border, with vehicle traffic on the Via Baltica S61 expressway and surrounding agricultural and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. Winter residential wood and heating oil burning generates seasonal PM2.5 elevation, while the relatively low industrial base and Baltic weather systems from the north generally provide cleaner background air than the coal-dependent southwestern Polish cities throughout the year.
