Sosnowiec's air quality faces serious challenges as part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with coal mining, coking plants, and heavy industry combined with vehicle traffic on the A4 motorway generating some of Poland's highest PM2.5 and benzo[a]pyrene concentrations. The flat Silesian basin provides some wind dispersal, but the industrial density of the surrounding Katowice conurbation maintains elevated background pollution, and Sosnowiec's coal legacy makes it among the Upper Silesian agglomeration's more persistently polluted municipalities.
