Legnica's air quality faces significant challenges from the KGHM Polska Miedź copper smelter, one of Poland's largest metallurgical operations generating elevated SO₂, lead, and heavy metal PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the A4 motorway. The flat Lower Silesian plain provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while the copper smelter's industrial scale makes Legnica Poland's most distinctively heavy metal-defined urban air quality environment.

Are air quality levels in Legnica based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
