Gliwice's air quality faces serious challenges as part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with coal mining, coking operations, and the surrounding heavy industrial complex combined with vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway generating elevated PM2.5, SO₂, and benzo[a]pyrene. The flat Silesian basin provides some wind dispersal, but the industrial density of the surrounding Katowice-Gliwice-Zabrze conurbation maintains consistently elevated background pollution.
