Tatabánya's air quality reflects the Tatabánya basin at the Transdanubian foothills in northwestern Hungary, with vehicle traffic on the M1 motorway and the legacy of coal mining and cement production generating elevated industrial PM2.5 and calcium dust alongside residential heating. The surrounding Vértes and Gerecse hills create topographic enclosure, while winter temperature inversions in the basin concentrate industrial and heating emissions throughout the Hungarian heating season.
