Szeged's air quality reflects its position on the flat Pannonian plain in southeastern Hungary at the confluence of the Tisza and Maros rivers, with vehicle traffic on the M43 motorway and residential coal and wood burning generating elevated PM2.5 during winter. The flat Great Hungarian Plain generally allows reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while winter temperature inversions on the open Alföld concentrate heating and vehicle emissions under cold anticyclonic periods, and the surrounding Bácska agricultural plain contributes ammonia and dust seasonally.
