Pécs's air quality reflects its position at the foot of the Mecsek hills in southern Hungary, with the partial topographic shelter of the Mecsek massif creating varied air quality conditions between the sheltered valley neighbourhoods and the more exposed hillside areas. Vehicle traffic on the M6 motorway and the legacy of coal mining in the surrounding Baranya coalfield contribute local sources, while winter residential heating and temperature inversions on the southern Hungarian plain elevate PM2.5 during calm cold periods.
