Szolnok's air quality reflects the flat Great Hungarian Plain position on the Tisza river, with vehicle traffic on the M4 motorway and surrounding food processing and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. Winter residential heating and temperature inversions on the open Alföld create seasonal PM2.5 challenges, while the flat Pannonian plain generally allows reasonable dispersal on most days and the Tisza river corridor provides limited ventilation on prevailing southerly and northerly wind days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Szolnok right now?

On 9 August 2026, overall air quality in Szolnok is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 36.7/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 40.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Szolnok?

On 10 August 2026, air quality conditions in Szolnok will be similar to today, with PM1 forecast at fair at 20.6/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 AM (NO2: 52.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Szolnok?

In Szolnok, reduced air quality is most noticeable when poplar and linden pollen peaks, and on days affected by vehicle traffic on the M4 motorway and surrounding food processing and manufacturing industry; a shift to wetter or windier weather typically brings noticeable relief.

Are air quality levels in Szolnok based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
