Kaposvár's air quality reflects the Kapos river valley in the South Transdanubia hills of southern Hungary, with vehicle traffic on the M9 expressway and surrounding food processing and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The surrounding Transdanubian hills create partial topographic enclosure, while winter residential heating and temperature inversions in the Kapos valley contribute seasonal PM2.5 elevation and the western Hungary position exposes the city to relatively cleaner Atlantic-influenced airflows compared to eastern Hungary's more continental winters.
