Piraeus' air quality faces significant challenges from the Eastern Mediterranean's largest port, with cruise ship, container vessel, and ferry emissions from the busy harbour generating elevated SO₂ and PM2.5 alongside heavy traffic on the E94 Athens-Piraeus coastal highway. The Saronic Gulf sea breezes provide afternoon ventilation, but the combined port and traffic emissions make Piraeus one of the most polluted locations in the broader Athens metropolitan area.
