Irákleio's air quality faces challenges in the Athens-Attiki metropolitan northern corridor adjacent to the Kifissias motorway, with vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway and the surrounding dense urban residential and commercial character generating elevated NOₓ under the enclosed Attica basin's persistent temperature inversions. The Parnitha mountain provides topographic backdrop, while the Attica basin's enclosed geometry concentrates all metropolitan emissions across this northern Athens suburb throughout the year.
