Surubim's air quality reflects the Pernambuco Agreste semi-arid interior at 428 metres, with vehicle emissions from the PE-90 and surrounding cotton, cattle, and light manufacturing operations contributing local sources. Atlantic trade winds from the nearby Pernambuco coast provide background ventilation, while drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 elevation and the Agreste plateau position provides better dispersal than the lower semi-arid Sertão regions throughout the year.
