A short ferry ride offshore from Townsville, Magnetic Island is dominated by national park bushland and granite headlands, giving it some of the cleanest air anywhere in North Queensland thanks to its isolation from mainland traffic and industry. Trade winds sweep steadily across the island's bays and walking trails. The main seasonal exception comes during the dry season, roughly June to October, when smoke from savanna burning on the mainland can occasionally drift across the strait and haze the island's otherwise pristine air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Magnetic Island right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Magnetic Island is good. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 19.1/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 PM (O3: 19.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Magnetic Island?

Magnetic Island, like the wider Townsville area, tends to fare worst during the dry season months, when deliberate and unplanned savanna fires across the Top End push smoke into town on the south-easterly trades. During the wet, smoke eases but humidity climbs and cyclone season brings its own risks. For people with asthma or young kids, that's the window to watch, with little concern otherwise.

Are air quality levels in Magnetic Island based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
