Stanthorpe, set high in Queensland's Granite Belt, is markedly cooler than typical subtropical towns, with frosty winters that bring a notable rise in wood heater and fireplace smoke, sometimes settling in still, cold air across the elevated terrain. Surrounding orchards and vineyards contribute some agricultural dust, particularly in dry conditions. As with much of the border ranges region, bushfire smoke is a real risk in the lead-up to the wet season, when surrounding forest and grassland are driest. Its elevation and distance from the coast mean less sea-breeze ventilation than lowland Queensland towns, though overall air quality remains good.

Are air quality levels in Stanthorpe based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
