As a low-lying Gippsland service town near the Gippsland Lakes, Sale's air quality reflects its agricultural surrounds, dust and odour from dairying, plus occasional drift from La Trobe Valley power station emissions to the west, though its flat, open geography generally allows good dispersal. Being further east than the Latrobe Valley's power stations, Sale generally experiences less direct industrial haze than towns like Traralgon, though smoke can still drift in under certain wind conditions. Its flat, open Gippsland plain setting otherwise favours good dispersal of local dust and odour.
