Nestled in a valley bordering Canberra, Queanbeyan is prone to the same cold-air drainage and temperature inversions that make the wider region notorious for trapping winter wood-heater smoke close to the ground overnight, alongside traffic emissions along the busy Monaro Highway corridor. Spring brings a significant grass and tree pollen season shared with neighbouring Canberra, occasionally severe enough to raise thunderstorm asthma risk. Bushfire smoke from the surrounding Southern Tablelands and alpine foothills can also affect the valley during summer months when fire risk peaks across the region.
