This mid-north coast holiday and retirement city generally enjoys clean air thanks to onshore sea breezes off the Hastings River mouth and Pacific coastline, though the surrounding forested hinterland makes it vulnerable to bushfire smoke, as seen severely during the 2019–20 Black Summer fires that burned extensively nearby. Spring and early summer bring a notable tree and grass pollen season typical of the NSW mid-north coast, while the town's mix of forested hinterland and coastal exposure means conditions can swing quickly from clean sea air to smoke haze when fire risk is elevated inland.

Are air quality levels in Port Macquarie based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns.
